LITERATURE REVIEW

The Oxford Student's Dictionary of English (2009) defines game as ‘a form of play or spot with rules and traditional defines as ‘a custom, belief or way of doing something that has continued from the past to the present. According to Rudi Corens, one of the education practitioners particularly for children education at GadjahMadaUniverstiy (UGM) in Yogjakarta, children who do not know traditional games will not what their forebears or ancestors want to teach them. YunitaTyazz (2013) in his article Traditional Games for Better Education stated that through the games, children are taught the art of socializing with other children since many traditional games can't be played alone, forcing the children to cooperate with other children to participate.

Culture is closely related to society and one of the structures is the art where traditional games but people nowadays especially among children, think playing traditional games such as hide-and-seek, marbles, and congkak are old-fashioned and not modern anymore. They are more excited and interested to lock themselves in their rooms, alone enjoying the fun obtained from the playstation game or by exploring the virtual world called the Internet, which has never taught the social or moral values. Traditional games have noble values and moral messages. They also teach the value of togetherness, honesty, and responsibility. On the other hand, unlike the case of modern children's games that are manufactured in bulk, they do not innovatic and lack creativity. Children nowadays are more tempted by a variety of modern factory-made games. As a result, the presence of modern games has caused children to increasingly alienate themselves from the real world. The addictive effect modern games has also caused a person to not interact with other people to play those games. Zhang, J. (2011)

As time develops so does the human mind. Modernization in the technology creates new games which replace the existence of traditional. After knowing many kinds of modern games, children are not willing to play traditional games anymore.
