Epic Hero Persuasive Essay

In both selections, the reader follows the adventures of an epic hero on his quest to defeat evil and uphold their reputation or family’s name. In Beowulf, the fearless warrior from Geatland defeats wicked monsters over the span of his life, leaving his mark in the hearts of those he protected. Meanwhile, in Lord of the Rings, Eowyn, the niece of the king, is fighting in secret, slaying her opponents in the name of her father. Although both possess great heroic characteristics, when comparing the two, I believe Beowulf is the true epic hero.

An epic hero is defined as a character in an epic poem who is noble and brave and is affected by great events or admired for his achievements. Not only does Beowulf kill Grendel, but he also kills Grendel's mother, and the dragon, all of which are heroic deeds that no one else was able or willing to take on. The foes that Beowulf fought were all beyond human strength and capabilities, thus required prodigious abilities to kill.

Beowulf fights voluntarily, coming to Heorot because of the torment Grendel has imposed on the people, seeing an opportunity to test his skills. After defeating one evil being, he stays, showing great loyalty to Hrothgar
