American government

The Magna Carta

latin for the great charter

King John I was forced to sign by the English barons in 1215

Act was to protect against the barons against arbitrary acts of the king (not mean to help the people )

included ideas like due process and trial by jury

prevented the king from having absolute powered

The magna Carta was followed by monarchs to varying degrees for400 years

in 1628 Charles I asked parliament forced the king to sign an agreement to the following:1.could not imprison people arbitrarily

2,could not impose martial law

3.could not force citizens to shelter soldiers in time of peace

challenge the ideal of divine

after years of fighting english government invited two people to be monarchs in England

however,first they had to agree to new set of rules '

a few of these new provisions included:no excessive bail no cruel or unu punishment fair trial and no standing army without permission of parliament

13 colonies were established over a period of 125 years

subjected to the direct control of the crown

a pattern of government was formed of these colonies

the king named a governor who served as chief executive

he also named a council as advisors to the governor

eventually this council wet on to be bicameral

upper and lower

all laws passed had to be approved by the governor and the king

each of them formed their own governments

each of these government were formed from influences of the english government

Proprietary colonies

there were only 3 proprietary colonies

these states were granted land by the king

the governor was appointed by the proprietor

was proprietary colony set up as a haven for catholics

charter colonies

Massachusetts bay colony was the first charter colony

Connecticut and rhode island were both itself governing

elections were held each year for governor

all decisions were still up to the kings

King George III took the throne and took a firmer grip on the colonies and thir trade

Writing the Declaration of Independence

The committee appointed Thomas Jefferson to write the actual document

Jefferson was one of the youngest delegates

He rarely spoke in congress but was well known for his writing

The first section of the Declaration of Independence emphasized natural rights

According to the declaration the purpose of government it's to protect natural rights of people .

2.The second part of declaration detailed the grievances against Britain

Disbanded colonial legislatures

Sent troops to the colonies in peacetime

Restricted trade

Taxed people without their consent

Finished by saying King George III was unfit to rule

A loose confederation

State government

After the American revolution the Americans decided reestablish their state government.

Most state governments shared power between an Executive Branch (governor ) and Legislative Branch (congress)

Most states only allowed 21 year old white man who owned land and paid taxes to vote
