January 18, 2008, the worst day of my life. I was in middle school at the time I was only in the eighth grade. My mom called me while I was in class but I ignored it. After I ignored it the third time I knew she had to tell me something important because she never calls me while I'm in school. So I asked the teacher if I could be excused from class to go to the office so I could call my mom.

"Sure Ibn just don't be long because we have a review for the test tomorrow."

Once I got to the office I immediately got on the phone and called my mom. She didn't answer when I called so I got scared and called my sister. My sister answered the phone and she was crying so I asked her what was wrong and she didn't say anything she just said,

"I'm coming to pick you up from school right now."

When I got home my mom wasn't there yet and nobody wanted to tell me what was going on they were just waiting for my mom to tell me. When my mom finally arrived home she immediately yelled,

"Get in the car now because we have to talk!"

We went out to outback steakhouse and ate dinner like nothing was wrong. So after we got our food I asked her why did she call me and why was everyone crying. My mother stared at me for about five minutes in complete silence and my mom said,

"I'm afraid to tell you this but your grandfather passed away in his sleep."

My mom didn't really go into detail about everything so the only person I knew I could talk to was my Grandmother. Later on that day my sister and I went to my grandmother house and we sat there for hours talking about what happened and why it happened. I began to get emotional but my grandmother is the only person that can calm me down because of her words of wisdom.

"Ibn you have to remain strong for your family. You are now the man of the family, if your mother and sister see you upset they will become even more upset. I know this is a lot of weight on your shoulders but you will have to turn into a man at a young age to provide and help your family."

After I understood everything that happened I stayed at my grandmother's house for closure. It killed me just being in the house where all my grandfather's possessions were, and walking past his empty spot on the bed. I and my grandmother talked again after the first day when I was calm, and she explained everything very well to me and with some nice words because she knew how important he was to me. I had to go back
