                             Data Analysis with Origin

Intro:

The objective of this lab entails teaching the student how to input data into the Origin graphing program and how to use the various program tools. Initially the goal is to learn how to set up a table of information and create a plot graph from it. The student learns how to edit the various parts of a graph, from the axes to the shapes and colors of the data points. Then the student learns graphing two sets of data on one plot, putting equations in the table, fitting a plot with a polynomial function. Lastly the lab makes the student analyze the data that he/she is plotting. This lab is technologically relevant because it teaches how to use a program that will be essential in our academic careers and beyond. Analyzing tools such as Origin are used in all engineering disciplines.

D:

3. Standard error is the amount (+/-) from the calculated value within you are sure to a degree (say 95%) the answer lies. Standard deviation is a form of standard error for 95% degree of certainty.

B1,B2, BX…. etc. are all coefficients of the fitted equation line.

 It seems fairly random:

5.

What is the highest order term that you have to include for the residuals to become uniformly distributed?

Order 4 term is highest one you need.

What is the highest order coefficient that you can extract that is significantly larger than its reported standard error?

The B2 coefficient is the highest you can go before the difference between coefficient and error becomes very small.

Which of these coefficients should be considered when finding the values that characterize your data and why?

For this equation, B1, B2 and B4 are all good terms to keep due to them being sufficiently larger than standard error.
