Introduction

Chemistry is the study of the nature and properties of all forms of matter as well as substance that make up our environment and the various changes which these substances undergo in different conditions. According to Ikeobi, 1986, all form of human endeavors and absolutely nothing goes on in science without the application of chemistry. The importance and role of science education (especially chemistry) cannot be over emphasized. Chemistry has long been a traditional part of academic curriculum in schools and it is usually studied alongside other related subjects such as biology, physics and mathematics. It is a core subject in the study of many biological science courses such as Medicine, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacy, and Engineering among others. Thus a sound knowledge of chemistry is of great importance to many pupils and the community at large (Baja, 1976).

Biology is the study of life and living things through rigorously-tested and peer-reviewed scientific research methods. Biology has evolved as a field of science since it was first studied in ancient civilizations, although modern biology is a relatively recent field. Students undertaking this course will have a unique opportunity to develop core research skills relevant to a wide spectrum of biological research, including written and oral communication, skills in making scientific observations, and recording and analysing data by participating in an individual or group research project associated with a discipline of interest to them. Biology is a very important subject. It enables one to understand himself/herself and the surrounding environment. The knowledge acquired in Biology is applied in many fields such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry and agriculture.

In 2015, the provision and implementation of K12 curriculum has been done. It involves the Academic strand wherein STEM track is included. Students entering the STEM track need to attend their major subject which is Chemistry. Therefore, a student has to score highly or to acquire a passing grade in Chemistry to undertake careers such as engineering, medicine, pharmacy etc. at the university education level. The needs to pass the Chemistry class pressures the students to study more about the topic. By this happening, we can identify that some of the student’s especially senior high school’s experience different factors that affects the level of their performance in the said subject. All of the research reviews support that the student performance depends on different socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors that leads in having such performances in different subjects aside from Chemistry.   It is also noted that the overall performance of Chemistry all over the nation has been very low over a period of time.

The researcher came up to this topic to know the factors affecting the level of performance of Senior High School students in chemistry in Samal, Bataan. She wants to know and clarify the things that affect the performance of students towards the subject. Aside from that, she also assumes to know the different attitudes of students in chemistry and besides the researcher herself is currently taking the stemtrack and given a chance to study the subject. The researcher made her topic relatable and reliable for the students and as well as the teachers of chemistry in shs undergoing stem track. It is for them to have the opportunity to identify the different activities that affect the level of performance of student in shs samal bataan in taking the subject Chemistry.
