What is the Travel & Tourism?

The answer to the above question is quite simple. Tourism is big business and is set to become the largest industry during this millennium. With more people than ever traveling in their own countries and exploring new destinations abroad.

Tourism covers all aspect of people traveling away from home, either for leisure or for business, or visiting friends and relatives, and the industries supporting this activity. The travel and tourism industry is very wide ranging, covering many different sectors as

shown in the following diagram:

Problems in Defining Tourism

There are many definitions for tourism:

"…The activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for no more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes." (WTO, 1993)

"….temporary short term movement of people to destinations outside the place where they normally live and work, and activities during their stay at these destinations."

(Tourism society 1976)

Both the above definitions clearly shows that people we would think of as tourists are:

• Away from their normal place of residence (although they will be returning home)

• On a visit that is short-term and temporary

• Not always travel for holiday purpose; they could travel for business or education and medical purposes and yet still qualify as tourists.

CLASSIFICATION OF TOURISM

It is important to remember that tourism is not just about going abroad. Tourist also travel within their own countries, although the majority will prefer overseas destinations for their holidays.

Tourism can be classified into:

1. Domestic tourism

2. Incoming/Inbound tourism
