Summary:  Research was conducted to gain insight for nursing and to further develop theories regarding health effects from abusive childhood experiences.  Especially interesting are health issues that develop in relation to physical growth and mental issues.  Conclusions were drawn from 128 articles published within a 43-year time-span on adverse childhood experiences.

Strengths or Weaknesses:  Stressful childhood adversities are disguised under many negative health issues.  The study was valuable; however, a clearer definition of what findings should be included or excluded should be outlined.  Many illnesses and life experiences of today’s children were not considered.  For example, school shootings and other traumatic events should be examined as stressful influences, too.

Evaluation:  Nurses need additional knowledge and experience in patient relations regarding childhood adverse health issues.  An advanced model of primary care regarding this issue should be developed. Patient health issues resulting from family and social influences should be examined.  Negative past life experiences and traumas do affect future human development, growth and health.
