Chorus: What message has it sent to Thebes? My heart aches! Phoebus Apollo, god of healing,

I am so afraid! What do you have in mind to suggest to us now? What from the past needs to be fulfilled? Oh Divine Voice, tell me!

I'll first call upon the Daughter of Zeus. Help us divine Athena; and Artemis, whose throne is all

the earth, whose shrine is in our city, Apollo too, who shoots from afar. You three gods, come

to our defense! If you have ever helped is in the past and turned aside the flood of Death, help

us now, too!

The past makes us suffer, the whole city is being affected and nowhere is there a place in which

we can take refuge. Women suffer during childbirth, but do not bring forth living children. Death

tolls are increasing and the souls of the deceased are readily fleeing to the land of the dead.

So many have perished, yet, they aren't pitied and are uncared for. Young widows and sad

mothers cry out in supplication. The prayer for healing sends out a shout. Together, they are

heard in dissonance. O golden Daughter of Zeus, help us!
